Profile of Cork University Hospital

Cork University Hospital (CUH) is the largest university teaching hospital in Ireland and is the only Level 1 Trauma centre in the country due to the presence of over 40 different medical and surgical specialties on the campus.

CUH Front Door Access

CUH has 25,500 inpatient admissions, 27,000 day cases, and 58,000 emergency cases (A&E) annually, making it one of the busiest hospitals in the country. Cork University Hospital with 800 beds is the largest hospital in Ireland and this will increase further to 1,000 beds with the opening of an €85m Cardiac / Renal centre in 2010. The Hospital currently employs 3,400 staff of multiple professions and is the primary teaching hospital for the Faculty of Health and Science in University College Cork. A formalised Memorandum of Understanding Further strengthens this relationship between both parties. One of the two undergraduates schools for dentists in the  Republic of Ireland is located in the grounds of Cork University Hospital, which is managed by University College Cork. The Health Research Board has designated the CUH as a Clinical Trials Centre. The Pharmacy Department, Speech and Language Therapy Department and Occupational Therapy Department are working with the Schools in the Medical Faculty for the Implementation of new training programmes in University College Cork

Historically, CUH has operated as part of a citywide group of hospitals (CUH Group) including St Finbarr’s, Erinville and St Mary’s Orthopaedic Hospitals.  During 2007, the maternity services integrated onto the CUH campus. By 2010, with the maternity hospital and the cardiac renal project complete, it is envisaged that the number of inpatient beds on the CUH campus will exceed 1,000.
