The 5th annual Child & Family Study Day will be held on next Tuesday the 27th March 2012, in the Main Auditorium, Cork University Hospital from 08.15 – 16.30hours. This study day is open to all nurses/ midwives either working with children and their families in the acute and community settings and those with an interest in Child Health. Allied Health professionals working in children’s services are also very welcome to attend.   The aim of the study day is to promote professional development of nurses and midwives by enhancing knowledge for staff providing care for children and their families in the HSE South region in particular.

The need for continuing education and professional development of nurses working with children and their families in both the acute and community settings in the Munster region was highlighted and with the introduction of the BSc Integrated Children’s & General Nurse Training Programme in Cork, Cork University Hospital has actively engaged in promoting the importance of evidence based education and training in clinical practice for all Nurses and Midwives.

This year’s informative study day focuses on three themes with presenters from Cork University Hospital, Children’s University Hospital Temple Street, Our Lady’s Children Hospital Crumlin and the Health Promotion Unit, HSE South. The themes of this year’s study day are: Neurosurgery and the journey involved for the child and family and related occupational therapy. Non accidental injury case studies will be followed by a presentation on the interpretation of art in sexual abused children.

The afternoon theme focuses on childhood obesity from a psychological perspective as well as its management in the community and prevention through health promotion.
