About Speech & Language Therapy

  • Difficulties with communication or swallowing may occur in conditions like stroke, Parkinson’s disease, brain injury, or cleft lip & palate.
  • Communication and swallowing difficulties can affect people’s well-being and their ability to participate in daily life. We work with both patients and their families to anticipate and reduce the impact of these difficulties on the patient’s everyday life.
  • We also provide a service to Cork University Maternity Hospital, St. Finbarr’s Hospital (Care of the Elderly), and Mallow General Hospital, and coordinate a Cleft Lip & Palate Clinic.
  • In-patients with eating, drinking or swallowing difficulties are referred directly by their consultant. In-patients with communication difficulties may be referred by anyone who is looking after the patient, the patient’s family or the patient themselves.

The department is based in Cork University Hospital, in the ‘Shandon Suite’. The ‘Shandon Suite’ is on the first floor, near the canteen & chapel. The department is open from 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday.
