The Biomedical Engineering Department (BME) is part of team which provides expertise in the identification of the latest medical device technology, formulating the necessary technical specification that suits the hospital’s needs and issuing these specifications to the procurement department for the tender process.

BME currently has responsibility for the support of over 12,000 electro-medical devices in the Cork Kerry region and maintains this equipment to manufactures recommended support levels. BME is competent in doing this through its attendance at manufacturers approved and certified technical training courses which allows in -house maintenance to be carried out, thus increasing its technical knowledge base.

The BME dept has offices in the CUH campus which provides emergency and routine support work on medical equipment located in the CUH and in the Cork University Maternity Hospital. The main workforce is based in the High Street House office, which is located adjacent to the CUH. This office allows the daily repair work, routine maintenance programmes to be undertaken for the CUH Group.

There are two other BME offices located in Kerry General Hospital and Bantry General Hospital. These offices provide an effective and efficient medical device maintenance program for these two acute hospitals and presently limited support to the 19 associated Community Care Hospitals. The equipment located in these hospitals are either serviced or repaired at their locations by the engineers located there or sent to the main BME office in the CUH.
