Friends of Cork University Hospital

Established in 1983, the friends are pleased to support the hospital and to improve the experience for many patients, particularly those spending a lengthy time in hospital.

The Friends have 35 committed volunteers, who meet the criteria set by the hospital, and give their time willingly to participate in the services provided, which includes: ward visiting and a library trolley service to the wards; manning the Friends' Coffee Bar for patients in the Oncology/Radiotherapy Unit and the information desk for patients and visitors in the Outpatient Department (both Monday to Friday).

The Friends do not raise funds but receive some National Lottery funding and private donations, mainly from patients and families. The Friends run an annual collection in the hospital for the Irish Cancer Society and also support ACT(Aid Cancer Treatment) with their annual flag day.

Children in Hospital Ireland (CHI)

Children in Hospital Ireland was set up to help patients and children deal with the crisis of hospitalisation and its aims cover aspects of a child's stay in hospital.

The importance of play during recovery is universally recognised and CHI has been helping to meet this need since 1970 when volunteers began to work in children's hospitals. Groups work in co-operation with the hospital play specialist and ward staff. CHI volunteers have been providing play for sick children in CUH for over 20 years.

ACT - Aid Cancer Treatment

ACT is a registered charity, which provides support for patients and their families. It also involves in fundraising and purchasing new equipment for the treatment of cancer patients. A member of the group provides a daily presence in the ACT office, located in the Radiation Oncology waiting area. ACT celebrated 25 years in 2007 and since its inception has raised over €6m for cancer services in CUH.

The total spend by ACT for CUH in 2006/2007 was approximately €600,000.
