Research Education & Training
Cork University Hospital is the primary teaching hospital associated with University College Cork, and there is a strong emphasis on Research, Education and Training. Many of the Clinical staff at CUH have formal commitments within UCC and there are teaching and education facilities on site at CUH, including,
- A modern Main Lecture Theatre with state of the art audio-visual facilities and seating for 250
- A health sciences library linked to main college library (www.booleweb.ucc.ie)
- Study rooms
- IT Rooms.
The UCC College of Medicine and Health is located nearby, within walking distance, at the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex on College Road. Further information on the College of Medicine and Health, including research activities, can be found here.
Both UCC and the CUH support high quality health professional education. In 2003, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between both institutions, which continues to date.
This facilitates optimum use of existing resources and new investments in support of undergraduate education managed and co-ordinated jointly, which can only be achieved in the context of the agreed assignment of responsibilities, mutual recognition of roles and a framework outlining the ground rules for managing the relationship.
This agreement has been further strengthened with the announcement of the establishment of a Clinical Research Facility funded by the Health Research Board, HSE and UCC. The Clinical Research Facility will facilitate the development of exciting new strategies in partnership with UCC and affiliated hospitals and with food and pharmaceutical industries to produce new treatments for patients across a large range of clinical disorders.
Postgraduate training will benefit through application of the principles that apply in managing the UCC/CUH interdependencies.
A Liaison Group has been charged with developing policy and managing operational links between both organisations. The Liaison Group facilitates and promotes a common strategic approach within UCC and CUH. The Group is committed to deepening the relationship through close working relationships between all levels of both organisations. The remit of the Group includes:
- Undergraduate education and training in all health professions
- Postgraduate education and training
- Research
- Continuing professional development
- Shared facilities
- Manpower
- Primary Care and Public Health medicine, as a complementary vehicle of education and training.
The CUH Group and UCC will:
- Share relevant information and consult one another about their plans. These policies and plans will be disseminated to all stakeholders and reviewed regularly
- Consult on special interests and contribute to service, teaching and research of all senior health professional administrative appointees
- Where agreement cannot be reached at local level, request the CEO of CUH and the President of UCC to confer
- Ensure that joint appointments between the CUH and UCC are two-way.
