CUH Arts Programme

Mission/Aims

Positive health is more than freedom from illness or disease – it is a feeling of Wellbeing, an awareness and involvement in the joy of living. Everybody in the hospital, patients, relatives, visitors, staff and the wider community is enriched by contact with the arts.  Enhancing the hospital environment for the benefit of users through the medium of the arts is the Arts committee’s mission. We aim to provide an enriching inclusive arts programme for all.

Arts Activities

At Cork University Hospital we are open to all areas of activities regarding arts and health. Initially the main focus was the establishment and maintenance of the extensive art collection and environmental design & enhancement through Percent for Art Schemes, and garden design. Arts activities expanded to include – exhibitions, artists and musicians in residence programmes, multidisciplinary participatory arts projects such as the Puppet Portal ‘Project & Cloudlands’, garden design projects, community health projects such as the ‘Amulet project’ and many more arts activities.

We also provide artistic outlets for hospital staff to express their creativity, through staff art exhibitions, our two hospital choirs, creative writing and poetry workshops.

We are fortunate to have several venue locations for performances in the hospital, such as the Atrium of the Cardiac Renal Centre, where we have regular seasonal Concerts such as the Cork International Choral Festival, Culture Night, Christmas performances. We also have had an Opera night in our Educational Auditorium with piano accompaniment on our Concert Piano. We look forward to more musical evenings for Culture night and the Cork International Jazz Festival.

We provide site specific arts projects tailored to the needs of our audiences. We welcome artists with project ideas, musicians who would like to perform mini recitals on our concert piano and volunteers who would like to work on our Art Programme in the Arts Office or with staff or patients. Please contact us and we would be delighted to talk or meet with you.
