Vestibular Rehabilitation

  • Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialized form of physiotherapy that involves treatment manoeuvres and exercise aimed at decreasing dizziness and improving balance.

 

  • You will have an individualised assessment to determine the cause of your problem. This includes specific tests which allow us to identify what part of your balance system is not working properly.

 

  • Our vestibular rehabilitation programme consists of an initial evaluation which lasts approximately one hour .

 

  • Treatment will be tailored to suit your specific needs and may include

 

–repositioning manouevres- an individualized home exercise programme aimed at bringing on symptoms   to 'desensitise' the vestibular system, learning to co-ordinate eye and head movements and improving your balance

.-education about your condition and how to cope and become more active. 

 

Common conditions treated by vestibular rehabiliation

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo or BPPV. This is one of the most common causes of vertigo . Benign: not dangerous or likely to cause lasting effects.Paroxysmal: rapid onset, reaches a peak and then slowly goes away.Positional: triggered by changes in head positionVertigo: abnormal sensation of movement,world or self .

 

  • Vestibular Neuritis /Labyrinthitis- (inflammation often caused by a viral infection)
  • Acoustic Neuroma – following surgery to remove benign tumour 
  • Trauma or head injuries 
  • Menieres Disease- also comes with low pitched tinnitus or “fullness”

Referral – Referral for vestibular rehabilitation is via your CUH consultant
