Pallative Care Service
The palliative care service helps to enhance the quality of life of patients with a life limiting illness which is appropriate and sensitive to the needs and individual choices of patients, families, carers and health professionals. Patients requiring palliative care may include those with cancer, those at the end-stage of other non-malignant diseases or with any life threatening illness. This care is preferably provided in the environment of the person’s choice aiming to maximise physical, psychological, social and spiritual support of patients, families and friends.
The palliative care team comprises a consultant, clinical nurse specialists and works with other health professionals in the hospital through advice, education and research. The Cork University Hospital service works closely with other services in the community and at St Patrick's Marymount Hospice.

Referrals are accepted for both cancer and non-cancer diagnosis at the request of the patient’s medical consultant. The clinical nurse specialists are available Monday – Friday from 8.00am to 5.00pm. The specialist palliative care team normally sees patients within one working day of referral to the service.
