Bantry General Hospital provides services to the population of a unique, rural, area encompassing West Cork and South Kerry. The area extends from the Beara and Sheep’s Head Peninsulas in the south to Kenmare in the west, Macroom and Clonakilty in the north and Timoleague in the east and includes several inhabited islands. The hospital is located approximately 60 miles from Cork University Hospital in Cork City. 

Under the Reconfiguration of Services Cork & Kerry, BGH has been designated the only Model 2 Remote Rural hospital. 

 

Services Overview 

Bantry General Hospital has over 120 inpatients and daycase beds providing acute general hospital services to the people of West Cork. It has over 242 staff and an annual gross budget for 2016 of €19.812 million. Its principal services are as follows:

 

Injury Unit – open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm, last registration at 7.30 p.m.

The Injury Unit treats adults and children over five years of age with minor injuries such as a suspected broken bone, a sprain, a facial injury or a minor scald or burn. Staff can take x-rays and apply plaster casts and stitches. You can go yourself to the Injury Unit or your GP (doctor) or SouthDoc can refer you. Medical Assessment Unit - open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.30pm

The Medical Assessment Unit accepts referrals from GPs or Southdoc for people who have recent onset of symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain or blackouts. For patients suffering from medical conditions, your GP can also admit you directly to the Hospital 24/7 outside of the opening hours if necessary.  Visit Bantry Urgent Care Centre for further information.

 

Diagnostics – laboratory medicine, imaging medicine, endoscopy and cardiology testing.

 

Medical Services – acute medicine, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology medicine, cardiac services, dermatology clinic, Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, Parkinson’s Clinic, rehabilitation medicine, stroke unit, medicine for the elderly, Tilt Table Testing and palliative care.

 

Day Surgical Services – general surgery, orthopaedic clinic and plastic surgery.

 

Women and Children’s Services – day gynaecology surgery and children’s outpatient clinics.

 

The Hospital has the capability to resuscitate, stabilise and transfer on critical care patients to larger hospitals.
