Services Provided
Dietitians work with different medical and surgical teams at CUH including:
Cardiology, cardiothoracics, care of the elderly, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, gastroenterology, general medicine, haematology, intensive care medicine, neonatology, ,neurology , neurosurgery, oncology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, plastic surgery incorporating burns, renals, respiratory, rheumatology, stroke services, surgery, urology.
All patients referred to the department must be currently under the care of a CUH consultant.
Referrals are accepted from medical staff and clinical nurse specialists.
If you are not under the care of a consultant within CUH, you can access a community based dietitian via your GP.

What To Expect
As part of your dietetic assessment , your dietitian will complete the following:
- Nutritional and dietetic assessment:
Your weight and height will usually be measured. Your dietitian may also ask you about your medical history, your home circumstances, medications and may look for information on some blood test results.
A detailed diet history will then be taken.
- Dietary Advice:
Having completed the assessment, the dietitian will give you specific dietary recommendations. A diet sheet or an advice sheet will be given to you highlighting the most important information.
If you require enteral or parenteral feeding, an appropriate regimen will be devised by your dietitian.
- Follow Up:
Your dietitian will organise a follow up appointment for you. Occasionally, you may be followed up by a community dietitian.
The dietitian will continue to see you in outpatients until your dietetic treatment is completed.
If for any reason you are unable to attend your out patient appointment, please phone the department on the number above, to rearrange or cancel your appointment.
If you do not attend your appointment, you will receive a Did Not Attend letter from our department requesting you make contact us within 1 week. If you do not make contact with the department within that time, you will be discharged from our care. You can be referred again at any stage by your consultant.
Student Training and Education
The department is an accredited base training centre for undergraduate students of BSc ( Human Nutrition and Dietetics). The department takes 2 final year students annually for their clinical placement.
Members of the department also provide clinical nutrition lectures to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical and nursing students at University College Cork.
Research and Audit
The department has members of staff involved in research and audit, where several have presented at international conferences and have publications in peer reviewed journals.
