Children’s Diabetes Service
The Children’s Diabetes Service at Cork University Hospital cares for over 450 children with Type 1 Diabetes and also children with other forms of diabetes. Out of this large number of children with Type 1 Diabetes, there are over 300 children using insulin pump therapy with the remaining using multiple daily injections of insulin. A large part of our role is providing educating and support to children and their families following their diagnosis of diabetes.
A phone and email service is run 5 days a week for children and their families in which we offer support and advice and troubleshoot any problems that they may be having at home.
The diabetes team partake in weekly diabetes clinics in Cork University Hospital. The team also run outreach clinics in South Tipperary University Hospital, Clonmel and in University Hospital Kerry, Tralee 2-3 times per year. Children are seen in clinic every 3-4 months
The service runs a Transition clinic alongside the Young Adult Diabetes Service here at Cork University for adolescents aged between 16 and 18 years.
Insulin pump training and group structured education programmes are delivered monthly and are held off site at St Mary’s Primary Care Centre, Gurranabraher
